The Ways of White Folks, Langston Hughes (1902 – 1967)

This collection of 14 stories, a pessimistic view of racism showing White Folks at their worst, is in my opinion one of Hughes best works.  Humorous and sarcastic, the stories reflect the tragic, condescending and often deadly ways that White Folks interact with those held as less than equal.  These sadly truthful interactions between the races show viscerally the appalling consequences of racial prejudice in both the Jim Crow South and the Liberal North.

Soledad Brother:  The Prison Letters of George Jackson, (1941-1971)

Sentenced to one year to life for a seventy dollar robbery, George Jackson spent most of his prison life in solitary confinement.  The book is a collection of letters to his family and lawyers by this Black radical who co-founded the Black Gorilla Family.  Jackson was shot to death in prison while awaiting judgment on accusations that he and two others killed a prison guard, charges on which his accused accomplices were acquitted.  De rigueur reading by leftists of the early 1970’s, this combination autobiography and political call to action is not as the radical references seem to imply.
